St-Gilles studied at the Collège de Sainte-Foy and holds a college diploma in presentation aesthetics. He began studying painting at an early age. He studied with Arthur Genest, Paul Brien, Mario Mauro and Bruno Côté. It was Bruno Côté who introduced him to the Charlevoix region. The artist first made a name for himself with his watercolours, before moving on to oil, his current technique. He has made research trips to France, Italy, Northern Canada and the Magdalen Islands.
From 1982 to the present day, St-Gilles has held over 25 solo exhibitions in several major Canadian cities. This landscape artist is much appreciated by connoisseurs, not least for his great talent as a colorist.
Space and light reign supreme in St-Gilles' work, where the most constant impression is that of immensity. From the depths of the sky to the foreground of the canvas, everything fits together. The quality of the composition never fails. There is always a dominant hue in his paintings. Water is also present in the majority of his landscapes, no doubt a reflection of first impressions from the top of Cap Diamant.
With his grand perspectives, St-Gilles shares his emotion and admiration with us.
